Top Corner are launching their first ever London High 5 Netball league in 2010, make sure you're a part of it...

What is High Five?

In High 5 Netball there are five players on the court, but ideally there should be 7 to 8 players in a squad, this however, is not compulsory! All players rotate around each position, which means everyone gets to have a go at everything. Long term this means players will become extremely versatile, and therefore improve in all areas of Netball.

It is game which may be played by single sex or mixed squads with a maximum of 2 boys playing at any one time. The 5 positions in High 5 are:

  • Goal attack (GA) and Goal Shooter (GS) - these are attacking players and the only players who are allowed to shoot.
  • " Centre (C) - who is responsible for taking the centre pass, and marking the other centre.
  • " Goal Keeper (GK) and Goal Defence (GD) - these are defensive players. The goal keeper marks the goal shooter, and the goal defence marks the goal attack.

As you can see the two wings have been cut and ultimately the GS and GK replace their positions as well as still continuing their own roles.

Players rotate so that everyone gets to partake in all the different positions. This means that no one gets stuck in the same position all the time, and you get to mark different people during the game.

In any one night you are allowed to play with a minimum of 3 players (GA, C and GD) and a maximum of 8 players. If you are in a mixed team please see how many men are allowed on court at any one time:

  • 3 players - 1 man minimum and maximum
  • 4 players - 2 men minimum and maximum
  • 5 players or more - 2 men minimum and maximum

If for some reason you do not have enough men or women to play, I am happy for the game to go ahead, however, this will have to be as a friendly and the team that had the sufficient amount of players will win the game 10-0 as per our cancellation policy.

The Rules

Matches are 40 minutes long, being played in 20 minute halves. Players rotate positions whenever their team score a goal. All players must play in at least 1 half. Substitutions may be made at any time in the event of illness or injury.

There is a rotation pattern set up so that the change over between goals is quick, therefore the decision of who plays what must be made before that you have your ultimate team in place even when the rotations occur! At the start of play Team Captains are to toss a coin to determine who takes the first Centre Pass. Subsequent centre passes must be taken alternately. The set rotation patterns are up on the wall on the court and therefore if you forget where you must go please just quickly check. The teams which is rotating positions has 10 seconds in order to switch positions - it is important that this is adhered to otherwise the game is held up.

Play is started by a pass from the 'Centre', who stands with both feet in the centre circle. At the start of play the GS, GA, GD and GK may be anywhere in the goal third. The opposing Centre shall be in the centre third and free to move. When the umpire blows the whistle, the Centre must pass the ball within 3 seconds and obey the Footwork rule. The ball must be caught or touched in the centre third.

A player must:

  • Pass or shoot within 3 seconds
  • Obey the footwork rule
  • Stand 3 feet/1 metre away when marking a player.

A player may not:

  • Deliberately kick the ball
  • Bounce the ball more than once
  • Hand or roll the ball to another player
  • Place their own hands on a ball held by an opponent
  • Throw the ball while sitting/lying on the ground
  • Use the goalpost as a support in receiving a ball going out of court or to gain balance
  • Throw the ball over a complete third without it being touched or caught by another player in that third
  • Regain possession of the ball, having dropped or thrown it, before it has been touched by another player

Penalty: Free Pass

A player may receive the ball with one foot grounded or may jump to catch then land on one foot. While that landing foot remains on the ground the other foot may be moved in any direction and any number of times, pivoting on the landing foot if desired. Hopping is not allowed. OR A player may receive the ball whilst both feet are grounded, or may jump to catch and land on both feet simultaneously. The player may then chose to move either foot and the remaining foot shall then be considered to be the landing foot.

A goal may only be scored by the Goal Shooter or the Goal Attack from within the shooting circle.

The player with the ball must be permitted an unimpeded throwing or shooting action. One jump to intercept a throw or shot at goal is permitted provided that the player is at least 1m away and that the arms are not outstretched prior to the jump. Jumping up and down in front of a player is not permitted.

No player shall knock or push an opponent or interfere with his/her play, either accidentally or deliberately.

A ball is out of court when it, or a player touching it, touches the ground or an object outside the court. The line counts as part of the court. If the ball hits the post and bounces back into court, it is still in play.

The throw-in is taken at the point where the ball crossed the line. Any player allowed in that part of the court may take the throw-in and must stand outside the court with both feet behind the line. When the player taking the throw-in has checked that all other players are on court, she/he must release the ball within 4 seconds.

A player is offside if she/he enters any area of the court in which she/he is not allowed.
